How your bill is worked out

Each fuel is charged in two parts: a unit rate for every kWh you use and a standing charge for every day you're supplied. So a yearly bill is (kWh × unit rate) + (365 × standing charge), for electricity and gas separately. The calculator uses the maximum price cap rates for Direct Debit customers in your region. If you untick the gas box, it leaves out gas and its standing charge, as for an all-electric home.

Your annual kWh figures are on your bill or in your supplier's app, often labelled "annual consumption" or "estimated annual usage". If you can't find them, the defaults are Ofgem's typical (medium) usage: 2,500 kWh of electricity and 9,500 kWh of gas a year.

Typical bill by region

At typical usage, the yearly dual-fuel bill ranges from £1,672 in East Midlands to £1,805 in Merseyside and North Wales, mostly because electricity standing charges differ by region.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average UK energy bill?

Ofgem says a household with typical usage pays £1,723 a year under the 1 October to 31 December 2026 price cap, paying by Direct Debit. Using the GB average rates and typical usage, our calculator gives about £1,724.

What is the average monthly energy bill in the UK?

At typical usage and the current cap, about £144 a month for gas and electricity together, or about £72 a month for electricity alone. Your Direct Debit may be set higher or lower depending on your usage and account balance.

How do I find my energy region?

Your region is your electricity network area. Ofgem has a postcode look-up on its price cap rates page, and your bill may name your distribution network operator.

Does the calculator include VAT?

Yes. Gas includes 5% VAT. No VAT on electricity 1 Oct 2026 to 31 Mar 2027. Ofgem's capped figures already reflect this.
